Diagnostic description:
Parmotrema melanochaetum can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: thallus isidiate, the isidia ciliate, margins ciliate, medulla white, thallus greenish grey (K+ yellow, with atranorin), medulla K−, C+ red, KC+ red (gyrophoric acid), upper surface maculate (sometimes not distinctly). Underside black, with a narrow brown margin.
Chemistry: atranorin, gyrophoric acid (Hale 1976).

Distribution: South America (Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay). In Brazil it was recorded to MS (Hale & Kurokawa 1964), MT (Hale & Kurokawa 1964, Marcelli 1993) and SP (Jungbluth 2006).
